Easy Dog Blanket Tutorial

Easy Dog Blanket Tutorial

Need a quick and easy blanket to make for your favorite pup? This 36″ x 24″ sized quilt is easy to cut and sew together. It also is easy to expand by just adding more blocks and rows!

The dog bone quilt can easily be made out of fat quarters. For the example 10 fat quarters were used (with enough left over to piece a backing) from the Art Gallery Fabrics Oh Woof! collection. Make sure when selecting fabrics that you have a variety of light fabric for the bone and dark fabrics for the background. All pieces should be sewn together using a scant 1/4″ seam allowance, unless otherwise noted.

Quilt Diagram

Using the above chart as a guide, cut the following pieces from your prints. Make sure to keep in mind the direction of your prints if you would like them all facing a certain way.

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ square using an erasable pen/fabric pen.

Referring to the quilt diagram above, sew the corresponding 2 1/2″ squares wrong side up to the right side of the 6 1/2″ squares on the diagonal line. These will be the blocks that make up the ends of the bone. Trim off the corners above the diagonal line leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press open.

Sew the right sides together of the corresponding 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles to the 4 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. Press open.

Arrange the pieces to create your quilt top. Sew the appropriate blocks together to create the rows. Sew the rows together being careful to align the seams.

Prepare a backing that will extend 2-3 inches beyond the edges of the quilt top. Layer the backing wrong side up, a piece of batting the same size as the backing, and then the quilt top (right side up). Quilt the piece in your desired quilting method.

Once you have quilted the piece, trim off the excess and square up the sides of the quilt.

Finish the quilt with a binding method of your choosing. The example quilt used Chenille-It to create a border and also add some detail around the bone. If using Chenille-It for the border, first finish the edges with a zig-zag or overlocking stitch.

Sew the Chenille-It along the edges of the back first making sure to leave 1/8″ of an overhang along the edges and using small stitches. Flip the piece over and use the same method to sew Chenille-It along the edges of the front.

Once you have sewn the Chenille-it on your border (and the around the bone if desired) wash the blanket so that the Chenille-it blooms.
